I love love songs. I mean, I LOVE LOVE. Glorious love. Romantic love. Puppy love. Bestie love. Family love. Mountain love. Long walks on the beach love. LOVE, AND SONGS ABOUT IT. 😍😍
Last week, I talked about epic endings but now, let’s talk about LOVE! It’s the season for epic ballads and soft romantic melodies (with some sexy R&B mixed in for when it gets steamy). 😉
Here’s the reasoning & some backstory for each pick and my FULL-ON #Top20LoveSongs playlist at the bottom of the list!
20. Ink, Coldplay
Ahhh, yes, Coldplay’s ‘conscious uncoupling’ soundtrack Ghost Stories. Ink is my favourite love/heart break song from the album. It just stays with you, you know??? (See what I did there? It STAYS with you and it’s called INK?) ANYways, Chris H. shared the hand written lyrics for each of the songs on this album, so here it is in all its scratchy lovey glory (let’s ignore how much that sketch of a tattoo gun looks like a penis – YEAH?) 😉
19. This Will Be (An Everlasting Love), Natalie Cole
Two Words: PARENT TRAP. The ultimate 90s, Lindsay Lohan, twin switch, reunion, love story of my childhood! She isn’t even a twin! Lindz had to play both characters; the magic of the movies was REAL! This song is an absolute classic, ready to be played at the end credits of any romantic occasion!
18. All of Nothing, O-Town
We continue the development of my romantic beliefs. Let me paint a picture: I am 11-years-old, obsessed with O-Town (the incubated boy band from reality TV show Making The Band, AKA TV GOLD) and their blonde angel frontrunner Ashley Angel! My brain breaks twice when I learn his all-male name is ASHLEY and ANGEL, oh Ashley, my Angel. I am 100% convinced that Ashley Angel is my soulmate and that this song is about me. Big love lesson learned: Ultimatums are how love works best. What life taught me: NO, ultimatums are not best, win-wins for the win! Poor relationship advice aside, this song is EPIC.
17. Bubble Toes, Jack Johnson
It’s as simple as something that everyone knows: once you are introduced to the folky Hawaiian romantic genius that is Jack Johnson, the music lingers, forever… Bubble Toes brings me right back to my first Junior High romance and the beginning of a lifelong tendency to ONLY fall for guys who play guitar. Luckily for him, David played the guitar for me on our second date. #ThanksJackJohnson
16. Take It From Here, Justin Timberlake
Ahhhhh, Justin. Justin, Justin, Justin. SIGH…. Your love songs are perfection. Pop, R&B, Tennessee perfection. What else is there to say about Justin? Let him Take It From Here.
15. I’m Yours, Jason Mraz
So I won’t hesitate no more, no more
It cannot wait I’m sure
There’s no need to complicate
Our time is short
This is our fate, I’m yours
Those lyrics say it all. I’m Yours, is a beautiful acoustic California reggae love song from beautiful acoustic California reggae love song writer Jason Mraz.
14. You Make My Dreams, Hall & Oates
YESSSSSS. You Make My Dreams is THE BEST feel-good, happy-in-love, LOVE song ready for a dance montage near you. Thank you for the resurgence 500 Days of Summer, and your incredible post sex, morning commute through the park dance montage!
13. Love on Top, Queen Bay
Beyonce, The QUEEN herself, knows how to prioritize relationships in life. Put Love On Top! This is such an empowerment tune for choosing partners who prioritize and cherish you – AMEN SISTA! It’s also great for solo finger pointing based dance parties!
12. Best I Ever Had, Drake
DRIZZZYYYYYY. MAH Scorpio, non-November born, MAN. This is the best romantic rap song ever – IMHO. There is something about a rapper proclaiming that there is one single BEST EVER lady in his life – what else is romance? Best I Ever Had, is my favourite song to spontaneously sing to David, especially during long road trips. Keeps the romance alive you know?
11. I’d Have You Any Time, George Harrison
Here come the big guns, George Harrison. What a deeply feeling song writing genius. This soft pleading, heart-opening, melody gets me, every time. A co-worker of mine reintroduced me to George’s album All Things Must Pass and I had an intense 6-month love affair with it on repeat. Thank you for letting us into your heart George, I am forever grateful.
Let me in here, I know I’ve been here
Let me into your heart
Let me know you, let me show you
Let me roll it to youAll I have is yours
All you see is mine
And I’m glad to hold you in my arms
I’d have you anytime
10. Cesarica, Oliver Dragojevic
So in case we don’t know each other too well, I was born in Bosnia and spent my formative years living on the Croatian coast where my mama’s family descends from. On the small Croatian island of Korcula – where my family has over 700 years of history – also descends the incredibly sentimental singer Oliver Dragojevic! THIS SONG, Cesarica is his most romantic ballad of all. I wrote a whole emotional blog entry about it 8-years-ago, and the sentiment has not faded. As I said back then: the song is so poetic and gorgeous it makes me cry. For the incredibly romantic and nostalgic Croatian people, it’s basically our second national anthem.
9. End of The Road, Boyz II Men
Find a person born from 1980-1992 that didn’t/don’t play this at their wedding and I will record a VERY emotional black and blue 90s music video for you.
8. Hallelujah I love Her So, Ray Charles
They just don’t write love songs the way Ray Charles did. I think we can all agree that any song with Hallelujah in its name is bound to be delicately fabulous. Thank you for this sweet coffee oriented love song Ray Charles, thank you!
7. No One, Alicia Keys
No one, no one, can get in the way that I feel for this song! I love the absolute certainty and commitment of this song!
When the rain is pouring down
And my heart is hurting
You will always be around
This I know for certain
6. Love Me tender, THE KING
NOTHING beats the tone and cadence of Elvis’ singing! Love Me Tender makes me tender.
Love me tender,
Love me sweet,
Never let me go.
You have made my life complete,
And I love you so.
5. At Last, Etta James
Ahhh, At Last, the sweet soulful voice of Etta James. This song is legendary. All the slow dance ensue.
4. Green Eyes, Coldplay
All there is for me to say is: I have green eyes. This song kills me, very, damn, time.
Honey you are the sea
Upon which I float
3. Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?, Bryan Adams
😭😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭😭 😭😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭😭 😭😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭😭 😭 😭 😭 😭😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭😭 😭😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭😭 😭😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭😭 😭 😭
2. Something,The Beatles
Something in this song knows me. It’s my my ALL TIME most loved Beatles song. Will my love grow? I don’t know, I don’t know. But I would guess YES, definitely, infinitely more love the longer time passes.
Something in the way she knows
And all I have to do is think of her
Something in the things she shows me
1. Listen (Listen, Listen), Wintersleep
LISTEN, (listen, listen) this IS THE MOST ROMANTIC song I have ever heard (it is the soft silence of a heart entirely taken).
And even if the words don’t sound right
I will love you till the day my heart dies
Till the day my heart dies
